I know the heartbeat shows up as P-QRS-T on an ECG but I don’t actually know what each letter means. What’s the P wave?
The P wave is the small first bump: the electrical signal spreading across the atria just before they contract. The tall QRS complex is the signal sweeping through the ventricles as they squeeze, and the T wave is the ventricles recovering for the next beat. So one P-QRS-T is one full heartbeat, which links straight to the lub-dub in “The beat” chapter.
The P wave is the electrical signal of the atria contracting (atrial depolarisation). The QRS complex that follows is the ventricles contracting (ventricular depolarisation), and the T wave is the ventricles resetting (repolarising) before the next beat.
