What's the actual difference between mitosis and meiosis?

AMAnanya MishraMentorasked 4 days ago

We covered mitosis in class but my older sibling mentioned meiosis too. Are they the same thing?

Mitosis is one division that makes two cells identical to the parent, each with the full set of chromosomes; it is how the body grows and repairs itself. Meiosis is two divisions that make four cells with half the chromosomes, each genetically different thanks to crossing over. Meiosis only makes gametes, the egg and sperm cells.

Mitosis produces two genetically identical cells, used for growth and repair in body cells. Meiosis produces four genetically varied cells with half the chromosome number, used to make sex cells (sperm and eggs) for reproduction. Mitosis = identical copies; meiosis = unique, halved sets.
