Why do all the elements in one column of the periodic table act kind of the same chemically?
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell. Those valence electrons are the ones that take part in reactions, so the elements react in similar ways. That is why sodium and potassium both react with water to give an alkali and hydrogen.
Accepted answer
Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outermost (valence) shell, and it’s mainly those valence electrons that determine how an atom reacts and bonds. Same valence electron count, similar chemical behaviour.
