If plate tectonics is so slow, how do earthquakes happen so suddenly?

MKMeher KapoorMentorasked 6 h ago

Plates move a few centimetres a year, which is basically nothing - so why does all that pressure release in a single sudden jolt instead of smoothly?

Plates move only a few centimetres a year, but at a fault the rocks lock together by friction while the plates keep moving. Stress builds up for years or even centuries until the rocks suddenly slip, releasing all that stored energy in seconds. That sudden slip is the earthquake.
